Some may cut the mooncake into 6 equal pieces, while others will simply grasp the whole thing like an apple and CHOMP ON IT without hesitation. Now I know what you’re thinking, who in the right mind would eat an entire mooncake like an apple? But that’s not the point here.
Regardless of how you consume your mooncakes. Unbeknownst to many, these deceivingly small fist-sized pastries pack a punch to your diet plans.
Without further ado, here are the calorie counts for 4 popular types of mooncakes.
1. LOTUS SALTED EGG YOLK MOONCAKES
According to my mother, this is the one and only proper mooncake. I don’t know why but I’ve never questioned her, because if I do, let’s just say a certain part of my body will start to bloom like a flower.
Nevertheless, I believe that we can all come to an agreement when I say this is the classic mooncake we all know and love. If given a pen and paper and asked to draw a mooncake, this would be the go-to mooncake that many of us would draw.
Though it’s a classic, hidden underneath all that beauty, a typical lotus salted egg yolk packs 790 calories per mooncake! That’s equivalent to eating roughly 2.8 bowls of rice, or around 4 slices of thin-crust pizzas!
2. LOTUS SEED PASTE MOONCAKE
A humble-looking mooncake, simple and minimalistic.
Some may even argue this is the best type of mooncake. It’s no surprise when I was younger, my sibling and I would fight, argue or even race around the nearby playground to decide on who gets to eat it.

3. RED BEAN PASTE MOONCAKE
The one and only! No mooncake list is ever complete without mentioning these babies.
Need I say more when the name describes it perfectly already? Red bean fillings in a mooncake; I’m already throwing you my money.
Red bean has always been a huge part of Chinese culture, so much so that it has even been written in a poem in the 1st century AD about it. From red bean soup to fried sesame red beanballs and even ice cream ! Red bean is a beloved dessert all across southeast Asia.
But all good things come with a price, and it is no surprise that the beloved red bean paste mooncake packs a whopping 820 calories per mooncake! It has more calories than what 2 chocolate sundaes from McDonald’s have; 2 chocolate sundaes are roughly 660 calories.
4. SNOW SKIN LOTUS SEED PASTE MOONCAKE
Unlike traditional mooncakes, the snow skin mooncakes aren’t baked in ovens and are usually served cold instead of room temperature. Using two types of rice flours, these shiny jewels have a texture that is chewy and gooey that many people across Southeast Asia love.
A mini Snow Skin Mooncake contains about 93 calories and is normally offered in smaller portions (25 grams).
But be cautious. because of their small innocent appearance, you might be tempted to eat more than the advised amount because they’re so little.
